WIPs for every occasion...

...even if that occasion is coping with a poorly four-year-old home from pre-school!

I forgot how often young children come down with little viruses – Bunny is 10 and rarely home from school. She built up her immune system during her time at pre-school and early years of primary school.

But Little Flower, ah, she has a fresh, new immune system that isn’t as prepared for battle yet. So when a virus floats around the village, she’s bound to catch it, in varying degrees. Last night she succumbed to the croupy cough making the rounds, and we were both up most of the night. She’s fine in every other way, just can’t stop coughing, and we’re both exhausted now.

So it’s an imposed Nothing Day. No housework, no errands...I’ve requested a takeaway or ready meal for Darling Husband and me tonight, I know by 6 p.m. I’ll be a zombie! (Thank goodness for batch-cooked, veggie-loaded tomato sauce in the freezer, I can manage boiling pasta for the kids...)

However, I can only take so much Peppa Pig or Disney Channel as we snuggle on the sofa. My choices are limited to “easy” and “exceptionally mindless” WIPs and activities.

The brain cannot handle this today

It can handle this

I can’t face colour changes and fiddly rounds of this

But I can do a repetitive back and forth hooking of this

A crochet item for a man that I actually like! From the latest issue of Simply Crochet...

Fingers cannot stitch this today

You didn't think I'd just cross stitch another flower, did you? Just look at those golds and peacock shades!

But the repetitive stab stitch of this negative space project, yes

(There’s more news about that red heart, coming very, very soon...)

And, of course, lots and lots and lots of cuddles!

Do you have WIPs for every occasion? Tell me more...

Happy crafting!
Chrissie x

  1. oh poor thing! I have 4 year old at home today too but it is our play day but I have drifted into lesson planning because she wants to watch TV now that I have been over attentive for the morning. I can't wait to see that heart it looks so effective. Jo x

  3. Oh Chrissie, Sick little chicks is something I remember fondly....not the sleepless nights but the cuddles and coloring and relaxing with a Disney movies and a small child. You seem like the best mom and love all your WIPs for every occasion.
(yes I have WIPs for other occasion too) I save easy knitting for most nights.
I sure hope little flower is feeling better soon and the rest of the house stays well!!
    Keep well yourself, xoRobin

  4. Wishing your wee girl a speedy recovery - and you a good night's sleep tonight. You just never know the moment it's going to strike - I went for a run yesterday after dropping the girls off at school, got a shower then got an attack of dizziness, threw up whilst drying my hair and had to go to bed for two hours. Felt perfectly fine when I got up - just felt a bit miffed my plans for the day had gone awry. The scarf yarn looks super snuggly, and love the heart project. Enjoy your cuddly crafty afternoon. X

  5. I hope she's feeling better soon and that you get some sleep tonight, I tend to do a bit of my Purple Leaf cushion at times like this, rows and rows of repeating Stocking stitch, it's a very ongoing WIP been in the making since last January.

  8. Oh I hope your little one is ok, understandable that your brain can only handle so much. Though you may have just convinced me to get the newest magazine as I really like the look of that scarf.

  15. I'm so sorry your little princess isn't well... I am home for the second day in a row from work because my 11 year old has what we call "The Crud", with a deep cough and sore throat, I took him to the Doctor today to find out it's just a virus that will work it's way through... so I know exactly what kind of day you had today. I have to say that on your blog it's the first time I have seen the cross stitch with the space in the middle and the stitching on the outside, I really like it, looks fantastic! I can't wait to see it completely finished.
I hope your daughter is back to herself and feeling very well soon,
    Much love,
    Tammy

  16. Ah poor Little Flower, I hope she's soon better and that you both manage a good night's sleep so the brain cogs can turn more successfully tomorrow. A croupy cough is exhausting and we Mum's feel upset and a bit useless cause we can't take it away, but she's getting what she needs in the meantime - lots of cuddly love and attention from Mum!
I am loving your negative space work Chrissie, and I adore dragonflies and your beautiful blanket-on-the-way, as well as that gorgeous scarf, but sadly it takes weeks and weeks for Simply Crochet to get here so I have to be patient to see more of it's latest content, unless I buy it for my iPad - and that's nice but not the same as the lovely mag in my hands, flicking through ……
Wishing you and family well! Warm hugs, Joy xoxo

  17. Sorry to hear that little flower is not well, hope that she is better again soon. Is that a new Mollie Makes that I spy - I will have to check up on that! I love that you approach having lots of things on the go as a positive thing, I always feel guilty that I am not concentrating on something if I have lots on the go, I will think of it as a good thing now, different things for different occasions! Hope that tomorrow is a better day. xx

  18. What a lovely post. I am sorry that Little Flower is unwell (we were up loads with Angus last night too - curse autumn and it's germs!) but what a sweet glimpse into your day and your current projects. I especially love the look of the negative space embroidery. I do hope your girl feels better tomorrow. xx

  19. I hope she's better soon. I know exactly what you mean about the difference in their ages; my son is eight now and rarely gets sick but my daughter at five still gets sick pretty often. I have projects like this too; for me, it's important not to need to count anything, or to count to a really low number, when I don't have much mental capacity.

  20. Aww I hope she feels better soon. Sick little ones are the worst!
I generally have a stitching project and a yarn project to work on depending on my mood. Sometimes I'll have a more complex cross stitch and a simpler one, especially if I'm going on any long car drives! I love to stitch in the car but it has to be simple!

  22. Hope she's feeling better soon and the two of you get some rest. There's nothing more exhausting than a bad cough, I don't think...especially when you can't lie down without having a coughing fit!!
    Take care,
    Sarah xx

  25. Chrissie, I hope your Little Flower is over her nasty cough very soon and you're both able to get some much needed sleep. You are prepared though with all your lovely projects! xoxo

  26. Hope little flower feels better really soon. It looks like you have the perfect activities planned and I really like the look of the scarf and hat set, I agree that it is tricky to find stylish crochet items for men!

  27. Awh poor little Flower, I do hope that she is feeling better by now. It is so tough for them when they are this little and there little immune systems need all the help they can get. I hope a day of rest sorted it all out for her and that somehow you got through to the evening without feeling shattered. It is so tiring having them at home all day, one soon forgets. I am loving all your WIPs and no I don't have WIPs for occasions, I just work on the things lying around, needless to say there is something different in every room of the house, so it just depends on where I am sitting. Sending you all a big hug xoxo
